For decades, farmers in Gonjaland and Northern Ghana have been struggling to protect their farms from the destructive activities of Fulani cattle herds. Despite their best efforts, these farmers continue to face harassment and intimidation from the herdsboys, who seem to operate with impunity.
The situation has become so dire that many farmers are now living in fear of losing their livelihoods. The Fulani cattle herds, which are allowed to roam freely, destroy farms and crops, leaving farmers with nothing to harvest. The herdsboys themselves are also accused of farming produce, destroying and burning bushes and farms, further exacerbating the problem.
Traditional chiefs, who are the custodians of the land and the culture, have a critical role to play in resolving this crisis. However, despite numerous appeals, many chiefs have beed unable to take decisive action to protect the farmers. Some chiefs have dine excellently in their traditional areas with strict regulations accepted by both farmers and Fulani.
This is why we are appealing to the chiefs of Gonjaland and Northern Ghana to take immediate action to address this issue. We urge them to adopt regulations that will make farming safe from Fulani cattle herds. This can be achieved by:
1. Establishing designated grazing areas for Fulani cattle herds, away from farming communities.
2. Implementing strict controls on the movement of Fulani cattle herds to prevent them from encroaching on farmlands.
3. Providing compensation to farmers whose crops are destroyed by Fulani cattle herds.
4. Holding herdsboys accountable for their actions and punishing those who engage in destructive activities.
We believe that the chiefs have the power and influence to bring about positive change. Adopting these regulations, can help create a safe and conducive environment for farmers to thrive.
We urge the chiefs to take this appeal seriously and to work with farmers, government agencies, and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to this problem.
Together, we can create a brighter future for farmers in Gonjaland and Northern Ghana.
