Ten students from Lawra Senior High School were swept away in the Black Volta, also known as Dikpe River. Five have been confirmed dead, while two are missing.
The students, who are part of the school’s cadet corps, usually go for weekend jogging.
However, these ten students decided to cross the river using a canoe to get to the Burkina Faso side.In the middle of the water, the canoe capsized.
A young man operating the canoe, who was suspected to have come from the Burkina Faso side, managed to swim out and escaped. Three students were also able to swim to safety. As of now, five are confirmed dead, while the search is still ongoing for the two missing students.
