The long-awaited reopening of the Damongo Saturday Market has reignited commercial activity and excitement across the West Gonja Municipality.
Commissioned on Friday 24th November, 2024 by the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, the market’s reopening marks a significant milestone in efforts to revitalise local trade and boost the area’s economy.
Originally built about 40 years ago during the reign of Yagbonwura Kurabaso, the market was completely reconstructed in 2024 through the MP’s initiative, transforming it into a modern commercial centre befitting the municipality’s growing economic profile.
Traders and market women, many of whom had been waiting eagerly for the reopening, expressed relief and joy as they returned to their stalls. They described the event as “a new beginning” for business and a chance to rebuild livelihoods affected by the long closure.
Contrary to earlier fears of disputes over the allocation of newly built stores, the reopening process has been orderly and peaceful. Members of the Saturday Stores Allocation and Reopening Committee have been deployed throughout the market to guide traders, address emerging concerns, and ensure smooth operations.
Some traders commended the committee for its proactive and transparent approach, noting that their presence has helped maintain calm and confidence. Others expressed optimism that the market’s return will stimulate economic growth, increase household incomes, and strengthen business ties within the municipality and beyond.
Within hours of reopening, the market had come alive once more, drawing crowds of buyers and sellers from surrounding communities. The atmosphere was vibrant filled with the rhythmic calls of traders, the scent of fresh produce, and the colourful display of goods ranging from vegetables and grains to livestock and clothing.
The reopening of the Damongo Saturday Market stands not only as a symbol of economic revival but also as a testament to community resilience and renewed hope for a thriving local economy.
