Hundreds of residents in Tamale took to the streets on Friday to protest against the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), accusing it of unfair billing, night-time disconnections, and using soldiers during operations.
Led by the Assembly Member for Choggu West, Hon. Abubakar Abdul-Halim, the demonstrators petitioned the Northern Regional Minister, calling for an end to night disconnections, withdrawal of military personnel, and a review of electricity tariffs.
The Minister, Ali Adolf John, assured that his office will engage NEDCo, PURC, and the Regional Security Council to address the concerns.
Meanwhile, minister for Energy and Green Transition and member of parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor has directed the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to
provide flexible payment plans for those in arrears and also be considerate towards customers who make regular payments.
The minister made the call on Saturday 11th October, 2025 during the commissioning of electrification projects for some 13 communities in the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency in the Savannah Region.
He warned, however, that the ministry will not tolerate illegal connections or non-payment, stressing that such practices could have debilitating effects on the power sector.
Commending NEDCo staff for their ongoing loss reduction and revenue improvement initiatives, which have boosted collection by about 10 percent, the Minister encouraged them to continue their duties with professionalism and respect.
